Mathias Énard is one of the most famous French contemporary writers, known to the Lithuanian reader as the author of “Compass“ (French “Boussole”) since 2019 when its translation into Lithuanian (translated by Violeta Tauragienė, winner of the prestigious prize Translator’s Chair of the Year) was published by “Baltos lankos”. This work of his received the Prix Goncourt in 2015 and was nominated for the 2017 Man Booker International.
Mathias Énard studied Persian and Arab languages and used to live in the Middle East. Elemental, darkened by night, saturated with music, softened by bitter-sweet humour and longing for love, accompanied by mesmerising erudition, somnambulistic “Compass” is a journey to earlier epochs, an invitation to comprehend oneself through others: to find another in oneself, to continuously look for links between the East and the West, between yesterday and tomorrow, and to melt walls between countries, languages, cultures, and times.
